Frequently Asked Questions
What is ecstatic dance? Ecstatic dance is a free flowing dance practice that encourages the dancers to move spontaneously whilst in a judgement free, sober environment. Using a carefully chosen playlist, we will take you on a musical journey where freedom of expression and emotion is encouraged and celebrated.
What time should I arrive? We recommend that you arrive to the venue at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. This will allow you to settle and ground yourself before we start, and to avoid interruptions once we begin.
Is there anything I should bring with me? We advise bringing a bottle of water with you and your best smile!
Is this an alcohol and drug free event? Yes. We are offering a space that is free from alcohol and drugs and we kindly ask that you honour this request. To gain the greatest benefits from our events it is best that we are sober and fully present. We know that for some people it may be challenging to dance with strangers and to fully let go, but it is through these challenges that we are able to grow and go beyond our limitations.
Can I talk during the event? We ask that whilst the music plays, we do not talk to one another. This is the time to move and to express without words. There will be time once the music stops to chat and connect with your fellow dancers.
Can I dance with other people? Of course! As long as they want to dance with you. Some people may want to dance alone, and it is important that we respect the others needs in the moment. If you would like to dance with somebody we suggest making eye contact with that person and holding your hands out towards them without touching them. If they do not reciprocate this gesture please accept this as a polite no and continue to enjoy your own dance.
Can I take photos and videos during the event? We request that you do not take any photos or videos during the event. This is to respect the confidentiality of all participants. Being photographed or filmed can be both distracting and uncomfortable for some people which would interrupt their flow whilst dancing.
What should I wear? Whatever you feel comfortable dancing in. Be prepared for variations in temperature and bring some comfortable footwear.
Do I have to dance? No. Not everyone may feel ready to dance at their first event. It's perfectly fine to just come along, observe and get a feel for ecstatic dancing. You may even surprise yourself and find yourself strutting your stuff!
What if I'm not a good dancer? We welcome dancers of all abilities. Whether you think you can dance or not, you can! Our events are a safe space for you to explore your own movement and rhythm free from judgement. We will recommend some dance moves at the beginning of our events for anyone who may feel unsure about what to do, but you are free to move in whatever way feels comfortable for you, even if that means not moving at all!
